Well, everyone, it's a new year - and in February, Les Livres Here Be Bookwyrms will be celebrating our one year blogoversary! You have all made this such a great experience for me - I started off very slow here, but upon finding the huge community of book bloggers, things have really started to take off and I know that 2012 will continue to see good things here!
Things have been pretty hectic here for me, so I know I haven't been posting as frequently as I had started to get used to posting; I know that things have been crazy for others of you out there too, thought, not just because of the holiday season, but also for my fellow students who were wrapping up the semester. I'm taking a winter class this year, too, so I'm still quite busy. I'm still reading every day, though, so even if I don't have many "filler" posts for a little while, there will still be reviews coming as I finish books! You can expect the next very shortly, as a matter of fact.
Things have also been tight financially, which is another thing I think most people have in common these days! So those of you who won my last giveaway - I haven't forgotten about you! I was expecting a paycheck that hasn't come through yet, but as soon as the money shows up in my account, your prizes will be shipped right out! I will email you individually once I'm able to send your packages.
Anyway! I signed up for a few year-long reading challenges, and I just thought it would be nice to have a sort of kick-off post, to recap what I've gotten myself into for the year. The links to each of their sign-up posts are also available on the sidebar, so if you would like to join in, you can follow the sidebar buttons, or the links on any of my reading challenge posts throughout the year.
I'll also be updating my main post for each challenge as I finish a book that counts for it, to track my progress. If you're doing any of the challenges, and you get stuck on ideas, feel free to stop by and see if any that I've used interest you!
So here goes! This year I've signed up for...
The 50 States Challenge hosted by Tasha at Book Obsessed. I hope I'll manage to find a book for each of the states! And in case I get lucky, by some miracle, and can knock out all 50 before the year is up, I plan to try and find a book for US commonwealths and territories as well. Fingers crossed!

The Narnia Reading Project, hosted by Rikki at Rikki's Teleidoscope - not really a challenge, exactly, since there is no set time-frame or restrictions, etc; just if you would like to try and read or re-read the Chronicles of Narnia this year, and share your thoughts on each book, stop by the sign-up post to join in - the last day to sign up for participation is 6 January!

The Mystery & Suspense Reading Challenge, hosted by Book Chick City. Just read at least 12 books from the mystery/suspense genre, and you're set! If I manage to do that many before the year is up, I'll be "upgrading" to try for 24. And if this genre isn't really your thing, stop by her blog anyway - she's hosting a lot of different challenges, so there's likely to be one that might peak your interest.

The 2012 Science Fiction Reader Challenge hosted by Working for the Mandroid - there are twelve specified categories, so that's basically a minimum level of one book per month! Not too bad, right? Especially when you love the genre. And if you aren't sure what to read for any given category, no problem; just check out the main post for the challenge. Leslie has a breakdown of each category, including titles or links to lists of titles that could work for each. So stop by if you get stuck!

The Mount TBR Reading Challenge, hosted by Bev at My Reader's Block. TBR, for those who don't know, stands for "to be read" - this is a challenge to encourage those of us with massive TBR stacks to try and make some kind of dent in the list over the year! There are several levels (named after mountains, of course); I'm committing myself to reading at least 50 books this year that I already owned prior to 1 January, and since it's a TBR challenge, of course re-reads don't count for this one.

And then, of course, there is the Goodreads challenge - I've decided to set myself a goal of reading 100 books in 2012. I hope that I can make it!
Also, it is not a challenge, but as it's the beginning of the month as well as of a new year, I thought I would add this in - it is sign-up time for the January round of RAK, hosted by the lovely ladies at Book Soulmates. I ended up not being able to send anything out for December, but I was not prepared at all for the holiday season in general. I will definitely be sending something out this month, though! If you would like to perform a little Random Act of (bookish) Kindness, stop by to sign up.

I really hope that I will not end up overwhelming myself with all these! I can use one book for multiple challenges, though, and re-reads do count for most of them, so hopefully it won't be too bad. XD Are you doing any reading challenges this year?

ReplyDeleteI'd do these challenges...but honestly, I'm lazy, and reviewing things is too much work for me. I'll be following along what you post though, so maybe if I manage to do some of the stuff you are, I'll comment on the appropriate entries for it :)
ReplyDeletehaha, well at least you're honest! I can be pretty lazy also, though. And now that I've found out how much work my classes are going to be this semester, I'm starting to think I may have set my goals a little too high with the challenges, but we'll see...

Dude tell me about it! I was at the point of enjoying work because it was a break from being in the dark all the time and i could charge my few working electronic devices. For something that I had never heard of for half my life, it sure is f'ing integral to it now.

Well I love my major and my minor, so the answer to that question would have to be "I ALWAYS get something good for assigned reading!"
DeleteWith the exception of the semester I took anthropological theory, that is. I have now successfully blocked my memory of that entire course, lol
The novels we're reading for the Ice Age course are William Golding's "The Inheritors" (which I just started), Bjorn Kurten's "Dance of the Tiger" and Elizabeth Marshall Thomas's "Reindeer Moon".
I dunno, I've had some awful readings, even in areas I do enjoy. I didn't much care for Great Gatsby, which I guess is a great crime against literature or something. Although I suppose that's the exception - once you get to college it opens up a lot instead of sticking to the "classics".
